Exercise SimEx 2017
From 9th to 11th of May 2017 Wessex 4x4 Response was one group that was part of a deployment of 4x4 Response UK to an annual training exercise in Portsmouth. Organised by the Students of Portsmouth University as part of their course this event is now well respected both on a national but also on an international level. Representatives from UK Government and NATO being in attendance during the 3-day exercise which had its base at Fort Widley.
The Exercise is based on the premise of a major incident, this year it was based on a variety of potential scenarios both on a national (Flooding) and international theme (eathquake). We were asked as part of the team of 4x4 Response UK drivers to assist in transporting teams of volunteers to where they need to be, aid with the movement of people on stretchers, and in one situation a 4x4 was used as a ground anchor for climbers to attach to so that they could climb down a cave.
Wessex 4x4 Response used this opportunity to test out the way in which we operate and to test some now software which we will use to manage the allocation of duties and the welfare of our members. It also offered us the opportunity to work alongside fellow 4x4 Response UK Groups such as Sussex 4x4 Response and Hampshire & Berkshire 4x4 Response. There was also plenty of time to get to know several other agencies such as Team Rubicon, Support 2 Ops, British Red Cross, RNLI, RAYNET as well as others.
