Midnight Beach Walk - 15th September 2007
Fund Raising Event in aid of Weston Hospicecare
Saturday 15th September
and work starts at 16:30hrs setting up in readiness for the 5 mile, women only
beach walk. Tents and generators needed to be set up, interspersed with the
recovery of ‘standard vehicles’ as the volume of traffic churned up the usually
compact beach car park surface.
W4x4R vehicles RV’d at 21:45hrs and drove the course identifying
potential hazards and allocating appropriate patrol areas, before returning to
the pre-walk party at Uphill beach. All units were back in position along the
route, with beacons to guide the participants, by 23:30hrs.
Over 1200 women made the
walk from Uphill to the Knightstone and back, only one of whom required medical
attention. This message was relayed to the medics by our CB communication, and
the situation was quickly resolved.
Waiting to start the walk
After the last of the walkers
had registered at the Knightstone, our vehicles drove a wide sweep back along the beach to Uphill,
so that no walker would be left behind, and then joined in the festivities at
the end of the walk. Knowing that everything needed to be packed away, each
member of the team volunteered to stay on and help clear up despite the hour.
By 03:30hrs, the beach was as we had greeted it some 11 hours earlier, and all
units were stood down.
Summary of provision
provided: Off Road transport (beach), communications (CB), visible ‘marshal’
points, and off course moral support for those walking 5 miles in the dark
along the beach at Weston.
Many thanks to all those who
gave up their time. As usual, all members were courteous, helpful and
professional at all times.
