Rescue Day 2007

Ilfracombe

The biggest emergency services event in Britain happens on the pier head, at the spectacular North Devon resort of Ilfracombe.
Organised, annually, by the Ilfracombe and district Round Table, it is their biggest charity fund raiser for local good causes.
With the town on one side, the sea on the other and blue skies above, the day was assured maximum visitor numbers.
In they flocked, not just to see the main attractions but also to climb the wall, eat the burgers and ice cream, and watch the marching band.
Every imaginable Blue light service was there. Plus many voluntary agencies including Devon 4x4 Response with support from other members of the Wessex 4x4 Response Association.
3,000 plus visitors crowded onto the pier. They watched the bands, the fire and rescue display and later when the RAF rescue yellow helicopter swept in and rescued 'survivors' from the sea.
Wessex 4x4 Response set out their stand to attract and inform the public of the purpose of the group, and to recruit new members. Additional attractions were a raffle and a tombola, which brought a steady stream of visitors to the stand and provided a much needed addition to the funds. A most welcome outcome.
